The Pines Calyx Brief
A brief given to 2 design teams to encourage the development of a metadesign practice

A More Natural Design Process
- In today's society, large currency systems increasingly dominate the way that individuals behave.
- The vast majority of currencies are debt-based...thus encouraging economic growth.
- We know that money can be (re)designed to make society less wasteful and fragmented
- But it is designed by banks and governments to sustain banking practices, taxes, profits, etc.
Can Designers Become Metadesigners?
- Designers must work within economic systems they did not design. Could they do it better?
- Whereas design is a proactive, artefact-centred, expert-driven, future-driven practice,
Nature works differently. It operates in the moment. It is a co-creative, emergent, reactive, and inclusive system. - Ideally, we need a self-healing system that co-exists with Nature
Growing New Ideas
- Pines Calyx is a greenhouse for addressing these questions
- This may mean (meta)designing for/with communities - including their exchange systems.
The Workshop Challenge
- You need to sow seeds of possibility, rather than design finished 'things'.
- In other words, your mission will be to create a metadesign brief
- This would be a basis for practical development in the future
- You are encouraged to use Pines Calix as a practical starting point.
Support and Resources
- Guidance and advice will be made available to you
- Ask your facilitator/s and they will try to bring support
- Please note: the facilitators cannot advise you directly.
