END OF TEMPLATE

Date of Conception

Sunday 20th January 2008 - after a m21 discussion on Friday 18th January. This followed Julia's talk on co-authoring. The original method was shown me by Otto, several years ago.

Generic properties

  • A method of getting teams to balance and optimise the timeliness and appropriateness of contributions in meetings.
  • This tool would enhance the sense of mutuality between individuals in the team

Context

  • Some teams are dominated by some members who talk at length, and/or who make frequent contributions and comments.
  • Some (often, the same?) teams are unable to benefit fully from the potential contributions of shy, modest, or self-deprecating members.
  • This is an example of a mis-match between (i.e. poor management of) the team's positional values? at any given moment.

Use of tool

  • An embodied exercise in which individuals (usually in a circle) are asked to find their point of balance when rocking slowly forward and back
  • The facilitator then refers to this as a somatic example of readiness or unreadiness to commit oneself to the group
  • When teams are being assembled this can therefore be used to prepare individuals for a more holarchic team regime
  • It may subsequently be used to re-calibrate for shifts in the Self-Assertion and Modesty balance of given individuals
