Benchmarking Synergies within Metadesign
Subordinate m21 research questions we will use to formulate metadesign principles and to derive outcomes
What is Benchmarking?
- Wikipedia defines benchmarking as a management method
- But is metadesign too inclusive and holarchic to be definable as 'management'?
- In 1994 the Global Benchmarking Network was set up to agree common standards
- But synergies are always emergent - and therefore unpredictable...
- One useful approach is wikipedia's rule for breaking rules (c.f. Wikipedia source for this)
So how might Benchmarking be useful to us?
- How should we frame our primary research questions?
- How do they relate to our metadesign research questions?
- How might they incorporate our Synergy research questions?
What research questions will we ask?
- How can we evaluate synergies?
- How can we measure synergies? (e.g. when is quantification possible?)
- Is it possible to benchmark synergies?
- Is it useful/productive/instructive to benchmark synergies within metadesign?
- What other systems are there for benchmarking sustainable design?
- Should we be challenging benchmarking values - and who might benefit?
- How can we evaluate our benchmarking models?
