Memetics is the study of the meme: which itself is historically regarded as the cultural equivalent to the (biological) gene. Don't be too easily lead though, this is an analogy and admitedly a very useful one - SOMETIMES! But it remains just that - analogous to the gen and thus is a nice form of shorthand to be used very sparingly.
