Our Vision

...OK, so Utopia (external link) may not be Attainable...

AU believes that a monolithic ‘Utopia’ is neither attainable, nor desirable. However, a network of ‘micro-utopias’ (i.e. transient, local, or immediate utopias) is feasible...but only if we believe it to be. We therefore envision a much greater synergy in society.

...if we join many positive things together...

Many good ideas fail for subtle or complex reasons. By learning to map super-complex systems we may be able to reverse negative tendencies such as Hardin's (1969) Tragedy of the Commons (external link) and, therefore, to turn ‘vicious circles’ into ‘virtuous circles’. The AU project envisions a new kind of metadesign that will integrate whatever makes people ‘happy’ with processes that also nurture the environment.

..we will create new meanings...

Some aspects of the task are simple. By creating names for key issues that are nameless we make them more visible. Once they are sufficiently visible it is impossible to ignore them (e.g. Lemkin’s neologism, genocide (external link)). AU’s term entredonneurship, for example, refers to an imaginative, multi-layered mode of corporate altruism. This also requires ‘aggressive optimism’, and the right balance of luck-attracting (external link) approaches will lead to a global pandemic of optimism.

...we can imagine how to design miracles...

Logically speaking, by combining all of these methods in the right way it may be logically possible to design a miracle. The Attainable Utopias Network therefore invites you to take the first step with us. We need you to help us envision what kind of world we would like to create for your children....and their children...and their children, and....
